ELTE at the forefront in Education Science and Psychology

According to ShanghaiRanking’s 2025 ranking board, ELTE is the leading Hungarian university in five different fields. ELTE is among the best 300 in Education Science and the only Hungarian institution to appear on the international list in Psychology.

The organisation published their 2025 international ranking board on the 18^th of November, in which they examined the performance of the best universities of the world in five broader fields of study (Natural Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences) and 57 specialties within those. This year Artificial Intelligence and Robotics were also included in the specialties, which is a first. In the end, 2000 universities from more than 100 countries got to be on the ranking list.

ELTE was ranked in 7 from the 57 specialties (mathematics, physics, metallurgical engineering, biology, veterinary sciences, education sciences and psychology) and was the sole Hungarian university that was ranked on the physics, metallurgical engineering, and psychology lists.

It is important to highlight, that this ranking is based on publication performances, this is why ELTE is included on specialty lists that are not taught at the university, like Veterinary Science and Metallurgical Science, these are fields the university’s colleagues’ research extend to.

On the top of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) list, among the 57 narrowed down fields, American institutes ranked best in 27 fields, while Chinese institutes ranked first in 21 fields. The most wins were taken by Harvard University, with 11 first places, the second best was Tsinghua University with 7 first places, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) won 4 first places, while Stanford and Hong Kong Polytechnic University both won 3 first places.

The ranking list was first published in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and has been compiled by an independent organization, ShanghaiRanking, since 2009, based on a transparent methodology and data collected from external partners. The indicators examined include the number of publications and highly cited researchers, and the number of scientific awards won by former students and current faculty members of the institutions.
